Well my time blogging here has come to an end. Barring a catastrophic failure on my new server or a site lockdown a la Good Weather for Airstrikes I've officially moved to a new website. It was fun while it lasted here. All 146 brilliant posts. I had some good times here on Blogger and I'll remember it fondly as my first year of posting. Maybe, from time to time, I'll return to this little mecca and check for new or old comments and wonder at where all the time has gone.

But if not you can always find me at my new home. Oh, and update your bookmarks, bots, and networking sites accordingly. The World Forgot has officially moved.

A Wee Bit o Change

As you can see I'm making some changes here at The World Forgot. The biggest is that we just went through the switch from blogger 1.0 to the new blogger. This, however, totally erased all the fun stuff we had. You know, like links to other blogs, links to bands, ads, etc. But have no fear, those things will all be incorporated, eventually, into our new home.

Our new home being www.theworldforgot.com. Yep, that's right, I'm running with the big dogs now. Well, I will be running with them as soon as I get it up and running over there. Right now I'm just working on importing all these old posts and after that I'll get to making it look snazzy and display all the uber content that you all love.

Franz Ferdinand

I first heard of this delicious group when, believe it of not, I saw The Thrills, Phantom Planet, and Stereogram play a little show north of Indy. For some reason they were handing out little Franz Ferdinand flyers at the door and it served to pique my interest a bit.

Now that was all years ago. Before the 'nand hit it big both in the states and elsewhere. Before they sold out shows and jet setted around the globe, buying pints of milk and going out for a smoke every now and then. That was also years before they took a Gwen Stefani staple dance tune and made it their own. Pay special attention to the way they incorporate some brilliant Billy Idol lyrics into the end of the song. It's glorious.

Ben Folds

If I could hang out with one musician for a day I would have to admit it would be a toss up between Ben Folds, Ben Gibbard, or John Samson from The Weakerthans. They all have such interesting musical styles and they can flat out write lyrics. For me that's essential to liking a bit of music. It must have great lyrics. Well that is unless you're Sigur Ros or some other ambient/sings in a different language band.

Anyway, lately I've been thinking about doing a week long tribute to Mr. Ben Folds, similar to the Seven Days of Sufjan series I ran last December, just to show how much I love the guy. He's brilliant in concert, he's quite affable in person, and he genuinely seems to like being a brilliant musician. Which, I might point out, is quite rare in the scene today.

So, instead of starting up a week long tribute to the new, and less drunk, piano man I thought I would throw this little gem up and see how much traffic Mr. Folds attracts. I'll probably do the week tribute regardless as to whether or not it gets friends and family to see this site, but it's always fun to know if something you love is loved, in turn, by others.

Ben preformed this track live at JTV in Australia. The story goes that he forgot he was supposed to play a cover tune and picked this song as it was, at the time, the most played song on his iPod. So he figured out a piano arrangement, grabbed three random percussionists from the studio, found some boxes and a glass lying around, and threw together a brilliant cover of a great song.

The man is quite literally a piano playing robot. And seriously, what other musician can ever claim to have invented the "guitarchestra." [think guitar + orchestra]

Foo Fighters

Well, the Foo Fighters never seem to disappoint. I've heard it said that they are one of the most consistent rock bands currently out there and I would have to agree. Each and every album they turn out seems to be a pure and wonderful rock album. And, to be honest, we don't get those very much anymore. Even the venerable RHCP seem to dabble a bit much in psychedelic funk to be called simply a rock band.

The Foo Fighters do have a new album coming September 25, available for preorder now, and I'm going to go ahead and say that it will be the best rock album of 2007. There, I said it, and there's no going back now. And seriously, just check out the below video for the song The Pretender, and you'll have to agree; Dave Grohl and company are genius.

The second track listed here is taken from the Foos recent performance on Radio 1 over yonder in Britain. They played a smashing set and are quite amazing on this cover of Arcade Fire.

Clint Mansell

So awhile ago I posted these songs because literally everyone I know was asking about them. Well it only takes a second to google and wiki it and then I figured I would share it here. Especially considering all of my previous links have been killed by the old file host that I was using.

I posted the preview for the movie Sunshine, below, for two reasons. The first being that it contains the song Lux Aeterna (Lord of the Rings Remix). This remix of Lux Aeterna (originally a song on the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack) has come to be the quintessential preview song. If you watch movie trailers you'll recognize this song instantly. And you've probably asked all of your friends, "what is that song?!". Anyway, the second reason is because I really wanted to see this movie. Unfortunately I live in a little bit of nowhere here in the States and the movie never played on a screen close to here. I guess I'll have to wait for the dvd to come out.

Rilo Kiley

Well it looks like Rilo Kiley is all growns up now. Using a new, and somewhat eccentric, mix of psychadelic throwback disco with other noise that appears to hail from Yeah Yeah Yeahs it's apparent that Rilo Kiley has come a long way from dancing the frug. To be honest I'm not a huge fan of this metamorphosis, but it is what it is. I'll let you decide how much you like their sound now.

Jose Gonzalez

We bloggers seem to drool over Jose and his style of music. I can't really pin down just why it sounds so good other than that it has a certain road ready [weary] feel that makes me want to jump in a car and drive west. Or rather just drive. On one hand, when I listen to Mr. Gonzalez, I feel the need to nod my head to the groove. On the other hand it feels like the music I would play over a nice slow motion scene in the new indie film. Something about a guy, running through an airport, in slow motion, with this music in the background. I think it would make everyone cry. I'm even crying a little bit right now just thinking about it.

John Hiatt

Well, we are undergoing some changes here at The World Forgot. The most notable being that we finally went legit, bit the bullet so to speak, and bought our own domain name. We'll hopefully be migrating over to that new platform soon, but not right today. There are still decisions to make such as Movable Type vs WordPress or cerulean blue versus indigo violet. Trust us though, we will be making this blogging experience more enjoyable. Please have a little faith in us.

For some reason I really love this song. It's a classic to be sure and it's also a shame that it hasn't achieved much more love in its time. We only thought it appropriate to list this song as the very first song with our new service and we only hope we can find another suitable song to mark the launch of the new page.

Email Loving, Updates

Hey loyal readers, looks like we'll be doing some updating [read: spending money] here on the site tonight. Hopefully by tomorrow we'll have the download fiasco all worked out and there won't be any more of the ridiculously confusing, not to mention horribly ugly, triple download method. It was fun while it lasted but it just doesn't work. Or look good.

Josh Ritter

Josh Ritter was brilliant on his album The Animal Years. Especially upon listening to his previous efforts. One begins to realize that he has progressed a lot through his long and tangled history, but it also leaves one scared for the future. It's hard to capture genius twice. Even Dylan, who at times Ritter seems to imitate, had some songs and albums fall flat.

Here to stand against the doubt and the fear is a brilliant song off of Josh's album which dropped yesterday. Honestly it's amazing, and if this is any indication as to what the rest of the album sounds like then we're in for quite a treat. Quite a treat again.

Good day to you all, you fair weather fiends. It is odd how friend and fiend are so closely related in the English language. Look at them, total opposites yet only one letter separates the two. Ah, bugger.

Speaking of good Britain, I refuse to use great before the term Britain anymore. I also refuse to call it the great Wall of China. Even Chinese people simply refer to it as the Long Wall. Nothing really great about it.

But speaking of Britain these boys from across the pond seem to be taking a bit longer than normal to spin out their next disc. Fileserver Troubles

I've been informed by my fileserver, Filexoom, that they are busy moving all files over to new, faster servers. In the transfer time some of the old files will be down and out but they assure me that things will be back up and running soon. EA Mix vol 10 - An Era Ends

Is it just me or does this picture remind you of every album your great aunt Ella ever made you look through. You know, that summer where you spent sticky afternoons sitting on the plastic covered pleather couches, praying that you'd get to play tiddly winks. Putting all nostalgia aside, believe it or not, this picture was taken only five years ago. Five years ago on the sunny South Bass Island where this monument stands large and in charge, forever remembering what Commodore Perry did in the middle of Lake Eerie. What he did I can't remember, but apparently it was worth, well, something monumental.

And that's what we have here in this post. It's the final of the EA compilations. In case you're new to the game here EA has stood for East Asia where our main writer and founder has been living and studying Mandarin for the last year or so. He says "ni hao" by the way. And now that we've moved all the sentimental rubbish out of the way we can get on to what brought you here in the first place, the music.

mp3 : Franco Battiato - Ruby Tuesday : Yes my friends, it is a cover of Ruby Tuesday, by an Italian man who sometimes suffers from a case of what can only be described as engrish.com-ness. But when he lets his lungs do the talking, as his voice soars over a refrain that is so familiar, it becomes apparent that this rendition of Ruby Tuesday is worthy to be heard.

mp3 : Sufjan Stevens - Free Man in Paris (Joni Mitchell Cover) : What do you get when you cross classic Sufjan arrangements [think vintage Michigan] with lyrics that aren't quite his own [think even more oblique than, well, everything he writes]? Well what you get is this song that isn't quite Sufjan, isn't quite Joni, but is still a delicious little slice of sound.

mp3 : Miracle Fortress - This Thing About You : Something about this song makes me think it could have been lifted from The Polyphonic Spree or Triangles. Or even DeVotchKa on a, well, less experimental day. Or maybe it sounds like The Walkmen ran into a roving troupe of angels on their way to the latest Asthmatic Kitty release party. Honestly, I can't really define what it is here that makes this song so darn wonderful, but if all these references haven't convinced you then let the music do the err... singing.

mp3 : Bunky - Chuy : There is something motivational about this song that makes it impossible not to start head nodding and foot tapping. Especially when the repetitive chord progression changes and the song turns into the sound you would get if you jumped up and down on your drum set, on acid, in the rain. With perfect rhythm.

mp3 : Andy Friedman - Self Portrait in White Knuckle Death Grip : This song made the mix because it is so depressingly and drunkenly simple. If you've ever slurred a made up song to your mates on the way home from the pub, referencing everything from Van Gogh to William Blake, it probably sounded just like this. Well, if you were a talented musician who was intelligent, still coherent after a bottle of whisky, and extremely well read.

mp3 : Half-Handed Cloud - I Got a Letter : This song may simply be described as the antithesis to the previous track. It's happy, hyper active, nonsensical and blissfully short. Don't die.

mp3 : Modest Mouse - Dashboard : Easily the most accessible song ever put out by the boys from Modest Mouse it still clocks in as possibly the weakest song from their latest full length. Probably the catchiest and most addicting song in this mix my only prayer is that it's not so overplayed as to slowly be going the way of Jumper or Scar Tissue.

mp3 : Rosie Thomas and Sufjan Stevens - Say Hello : "There's an airplane in the sky / with a banner right behind / loneliness is just a crime / so look each other in the eye / and say hello." Sometimes a national leader is measured by the brilliant people they surround themselves with. And sometimes on this blog we like to make far reaching parallel analogies and say things like Rosie Thomas should run for president because she's proven time and again that if you are her close friend you are probably a musical genius.

mp3 : Shannon Stephens - I'll Be Glad : People with the last name of Stephens should sing over banjos until the end of time. Especially if they have a melancholic, slightly broken voice, and a tragic tale of loss and longing to go with it. When you add the harmonica and harmonies to the mix you realize that as long as there are campfires this formula will never grow stale.

mp3 : Arcade Fire - (Antichrist Television Blues) : There is an inescapable quality to this track form the Canadian supergroups latest disc. From the overt 9/11 references to the fact that the track has been said to be written about the exploitation of children by their alleged Christian parents to the pounding beat that drives the entire ensemble to some sort of cathartic choir outburst toward the end, it's all amazing.

mp3 : Son Volt - The Picture : This song is classic in nature. It sounds like something that was picked during the late nineties ska and swing revival, set alone to age in some Californian wine cellar, and just now has found the perfect niche to fill. It's a light summer wine, with an earthen hue, and a splash of strawberries and cinnamon to make it interesting.

They're a little slice of fiction of the variety that fits nicely into literary journals, college radio stations after midnight, and pithy away messages. This is a song calling for Mr. Armstong to come down from the moon and to deal with the realities of the world he has for so long been abandoning. Brilliant.

mp3 : Gui Boratto - Beautiful Life : As with most of the EA compilations on this fine blog there always seems to be space for one ambient track. Or at least a remix of something that was once famous or trendy. And we only thought it fitting that we should end this mix, the last of the EA Mix volumes, with a song that simply repeats "what a beautiful life" over and over again. What a beautiful life indeed.

EA Mix vol 01 - Sounds for You to Hear

The World Forgot is nearing our first birthday. We've come a long way from our first post. In fact we've come along way from that first mix album we threw together and emailed [and in some cases actually mailed] to our close friends. Now it's been almost a full year since this little blog was created and what once started as just a space to host our series of EA Mix albums has grown up into something a little more sophisticated. At least we hope it has.

In honor of this upcoming milestone, as well as the fact that EA Mix vol 10 was just completed, we thought it would be nice to go back and re-release all of our old compilations. There's some great music on these nine albums and we hope you enjoy them all.

Well we're officially back from our globe trotting. Everest was and shall ever be a completely shattering experience. Simply shattering.

While we were gone our in box was having a small party of it's own. Receiving new music, promotions, an interview request from a German music magazine, and other various and sundry items.

Included in this e-mess were some submissions by a guest writer here on The World Forgot. This is one of his posts and we thank Josh for sending it on over. If anyone else would like a guest spot [and a quick shout out] just email us what you think and we'll either throw it up here and rebuke you or let your words stand on their own.

Anyway, here's what Josh thinks. "This song reminds me of what a new immigrant to America would tell their grandchild who has never left the country. It is a warning for everyone who is of good health, with the last line of the chorus being in Russian. Then at the 2:28 marker, the Grandmother has run out of English to talk with and begins to lecture in pure, beautiful, forbidding Russian. I imagine a child standing, terrified, yet not understanding a word, with their foreign grandmother ranting. Then when the grandmother is joined by another intimidating adult around the 4:00 mark, they probably wet themselves a little."

Cross Pollination the Mixtape vol 1

I opened my inbox the other day and I stumbled upon this little slice of heaven. In their own words "Mixtape Vol. 1, was compiled to celebrate Cross-Pollination, a weekly NYC concert series that brings together some of the most incredibly, and at times, undiscovered raw talent from across the country. Giving musicians the opportunity to stretch creatively with other like-minds, the premise of Cross-Pollination is simple. Every Tuesday evening at Pianos (158 Ludlow Street, NYC) two artists are invited to play together. Both of them play a solo 40-minute set followed by a 3 song pre-rehearsed collaborative set. Now in its third year, Cross-Pollination has brought together nearly 250 acts via 137 FREE shows. All artists included on the mixtape have played Cross-Pollination."

If you live in the New York area and you haven't made it to a Cross-Pollination show yet you need to jump on this bandwagon and see a show. The musical genius that comes from these collaborative efforts is breathtaking.

And breathtaking is a word I would use over and over again to describe their Mixtape vol 1. It's brilliant. All of it is brilliant. To put it in perspective, the first track by My Brightest Diamond is arguably the weakest track on the list. That's right, My Brightest Diamond just may be the low point on the mix. And if someone as talented and, lately, as prolific as Shara Worden is the proverbial bottom of the barrel then the bar has been set quite high. Quite high indeed.

Clint Mansell and Danny Boyle's Sunshine

You might be wondering how Clint Mansell and Danny Boyle's new movie, Sunshine, are related. Well let me take a second and fill you in. Earlier today I was watching a brilliant movie, The Fountain, directed by Darren Aronofsky. I really encourage everyone reading this to see that movie. On top of the old school visual effects and wonderful storyline was laid an amazing work of music that complemented the film without competing with anything that was on the screen.

And then the end credits rolled and I was satisfied to see that Clint Mansell was behind the score. And that led my mind on a tangential thought process whereby I remembered that Clint Mansell was also behind the brilliant score for Requiem for a Dream, also directed by Darren Aronofsky. And it was at that precise moment that I thought about the trailer for Danny Boyle's movie Sunshine.

You see, it's not a random coincidence. The song used to promote Danny Boyle's newest movie is in fact a remix of a song originally created by Clint Mansell for the movie Requiem for a Dream. In fact, it's one of the most popular movie preview and advertisement sound bits ever used. To be completely honest it was first remixed and created to accompany the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers previews.

Well, there it is. Three degrees that link Clint Mansell and Danny Boyle together. And now that you too possess all this trivial information it's time to give you some music.

Montt Mardie and Other Business

We here at The World Forgot need to apologize for having spotty reporting over the last week. But that being said and out in the open, it's only about to get worse. You see, the reason that we've been posting less and less is that our trip to Everest Base Camp is soon approaching and we've been scavenging extra money and camping gear and we haven't really had time to sit down and write a proper post. [And this hardly qualifies as one]

So we will be gone for almost two weeks soon as we travel to set our eyes upon the roof of the world. In the meantime you should really check out some points of interest.

First of all take a gander at what Al Gore has done. His documentary is masterful, Oscar worthy, and quite humorous even if being a bit idealistic. Check out his site and watch the movie, An Inconvenient Truth. [In other related news, I'm beginning to hate America more and more.]

The Curtains

According to their page over at Asthmatic Kitty, The Curtains used to play "very short songs, like quiet little lists of musical ideas." And I feel like I agree that this is still the realm of eccentric pop that The Curtains inhabits. The songs come across a bit as if they're unfinished. As if they started with one idea but then were distracted by every other sound bouncing around in their heads. At the end of the day the music sounds cozy, if not entirely coherent, or cohesive for that matter.

Like almost anyone who grew up in the Mid West I had an undying passion for anything and everything that came out of Billy Corgan's mind during the middle of the nineties. Here's an older song from his band, Smashing Pumpkins, that feels perfect to start your weekend with.

Stay safe this weekend, but don't forget to have fun.

In other news the rumor is still around that Mr. Corgan is reforming the band, dropping a new album, and beginning tour extensively. Here's to hoping that some rumors are true and that Jimmy Chamberlain is really on board.

Shapes and Sizes

While Googling this band I got quite a laugh at one of the hits on the front page of Google. Let's just say that it was a website all about finding your correct bra size and we'll leave it at that. All that aside Shapes and Sizes have a very unique, and quite eclectic sound. They might qualify as an acquired taste, but that's only because their songs can be so varied and schizophrenic within a five minute run time. For a quick example of what their music might look like in a visual representation you don't have to look any further than their website's first image. It's a table full of pictures of the band members which produces this slightly awkward, yet structured and highly artistic, vision of the group. I feel like that's what their sound is like too. A bit of hodgepodge, a dash or so of completely random creativity, but overall a sense that they are in control of the sound they produce. And that sound is something to be experienced.

Over at Asthmatic Kitty they claim that Rafter is a musician who has no fear. And that might well be true. If you look closely at this picture you'll see that he's busy driving, but maybe more busy simply not caring. He is wearing a seat belt, though, and that does a little to take away from the no fear claim. Oh well, at least he still makes good music, as do the rest of his label-mates.

My Brightest Diamond

When Asthmatic Kitty first signed My Brightest Diamond I was, to be honest, highly disappointed in their decision. But something happened to me over the past few months and for whatever reason the sound represented by My Brightest Diamond has begun to grow on me. It has somehow slipped into my heart and become something that I will put on in the car, on a long drive, as it slowly forces me to reconcile all the melancholy of my personal life with the gorgeous sounds emanating from the stereo.

And as if her first album with Asthmatic Kitty wasn't enough, Shara Worden took a break from creating new music to remix everything she had done up to that point. A trend that is rapidly catching on with new indie acts and up-and-comers looking to avoid a sophomore slump. As well as those just looking to make their music danceable. In the end there's catchy hooks, clever lyrics, and now a throbbing beat behind a lot of the music. And all of that adds up to something we should all enjoy.

Yes, I do realize that I've already posted this song by this particular artist. But since then a couple of things have happened. First of all the fileserver I was using crashed. Hard. Then I found out that only a few other blogs had posted the song and most of their links were dead as well. Finally I stumbled upon the above YouTube capture of the music video for this song and it really grabbed my attention. All these things considered I decided it was time for a repost of what really could be the greatest cover of all time.

Liz Janes sounds a bit like a mashup of everything Sufjan Stevens has ever experimented with and the voice of a girl who grew up listening to pop radio in the late 70's. Sometimes awkward, to be sure, but most of the time overflowing with warmth, vitality, and a smokey sort of personality that is unapologetically and unabashedly everything she wanted it to be. Maybe swagger would be a good word for Liz. She has a certain experimental swagger that coincided nicely with Sufjan's backdrop of sound.

He writes about abstract ideas, awkward moments, and the glories found in all thins normal. Castanets

Castanets is a band, actually just Raymond Raposa, that sounds a little bit like everything else and yet strikingly like nothing I've ever heard before. According to Castanets' label, "Castanets is American music drowned then reborn clear-eyed and wet with sea spray." And after thinking long and hard about the music I'm posting today I couldn't come up with a better description. These songs are part depressing, part scintillating, part simple, and part staggeringly drunk. But through the entire mess they are beautiful. They are something to be loved or hate but not ignored.

Belltower

Surprisingly little can be found out about this band, Belltower, and to be honest that might be because there really isn't all that much to be known [or heard]. Apparently they are a small outfit made up of various ragamuffins found throughout the Asthmatic Kitty label, most notably Bridgit DeCook, and some other San Francisco natives.

This song is a bit monotonous and I found it only by digging through the Asthmatic Kitty website. Relentless Googling didn't turn up anything deeper than that. Maybe one of you will download the track, love it, and start a viral campaign for Belltower. Maybe not.

I cannot remember what it was that I was watching the other day. I really cannot recall what it was. Granted it was some form of entertainment, but whether it was a television program, a miniseries, or a movie I just cannot remember. And the following situation occurs in my life more than could be deemed simple random occurrences. I'm sitting around, absorbed in some form of entertainment, and yet at the end of the night all I can remember is this one song that I really wanted to listen to again.

And here, with Roberta Flack, is one of those songs. She's a classic singer and an amazingly talented songwriter. Here though I've posted a song written by other legends, Simon and Garfunkel. I'm not sure why Roberta decided to cover this song, but it is gorgeous.

What's New, What's Forgotten

Sometimes when we post here at The World Forgot we do so for no reason other than that we were all bored and couldn't think of anything more entertaining to do. In fact it was this boredom that led us to the new site design. We hope you like it.

Lately we've been reading a lot of magazines. Loads of them really. Spin still holds a place dear to our hearts. It's the magazine that we grew up on musically and it helped us realize, during university, that there are other niches outside of our own. Then of course there's RollingStone, the music magazine that we all love to hate, and hate to admit that we still read. We here have relegated reading RollingStone to bathroom time only as it seems most appropriate in that setting. Then there's relative newcomer to the music magazine scene, Paste. Sure they've been around as long as Norah Jones, but that's a touch less ancient than other publications. Easily the more literary of the magazine trifecta it's a great place to discover music and enjoy literature. In fact, to quote them, they're a magazine that has realized "that people don't stop caring about music after they graduate from college." Kudos to your magazine and your sampler discs, Paste, they really are something special.

Then there's all the work we've done around here. If you take a minute and notice we've changed our template a little, tweaked the coloration, and in a few days we might even throw a graphic up there in our header. We also finally caught on to the social bookmarking craze that has spread like wildfire across the new internet. And although we chose not to include the entire ridiculous list of such sites in our sidebar [look right] we did select those with whom we felt the most beneficence. We might change our minds in the future, but for now we've elected to keep the bookmarking links out of individual posts. Most posts here are scattered and random enough without a billion little links cluttering up the lower portion.

Finally it comes time to include all the blogs that are now in our list of Friends and Lovers [see left bar]. These are a list of blogs that we read regularly, sometimes discuss, and frequently enthusiastically agree with. Chances are, if you're reading this entire post, you probably read their posts as well. Here's to those blogs who have lent us inspiration and good music along the way. An Aquarium Drunkard, Bows + Arrows, Cable and Tweed, Crown Dozen, Good Weather for Airstrikes, Gorilla vs. Bear, I Guess I'm Floating, The Late Greats, My Old Kentucky Blog, Songs:Illinois, Stereogum, You Ain't No Picasso, and Who Killed the Mixtape.

Well, that's enough blathering to erase at least ten minutes of boredom. Now it's off for a group viewing of Sergio Leone's classic "Once Upon a Time in America." Which is about four hours of wonderful.

More music is coming, fear not.

So just the other night, in fact almost immediately after posting about how terribly sad Joni Mitchell is, a friend left me a comment which led me to listening to this older song by Wilco and Billy Bragg. She had this to say about the song. "Okay, now listen to me and don't, I repeat DO NOT, go read the lyrics before you hear the song I am going to tell you to listen to. It will ruin the experience for you. But it's amazing. It will make you fall in love and you won't even know with what. You'll love it."

And she was right, I do love the song. So after some careful searching here it is, for you to enjoy. Maybe you'll fall in love with something too.

I was going to get some sleep, I really was. But good old Joni Mitchell, and I do mean old, wouldn't quite let go of my heart or my ears. And even if this could technically be filed as a Christmas song I really can't leave it in December. As with almost every song Joni sings I almost cry just listening to her voice. The lyrics and the tone are gorgeous on this track and I hope you too will come to enjoy it as much more than just a simple cold weather song.

I found this picture/poster of The Killers on some random website, and then I found a random live recording of their old[er] hit Mr. Brightside and I decided that it was just too serendipitous not to post about them.

So this track isn't an amazing find, in fact it sounds surprisingly similar to their studio release of the song. But it is a live track, I seem to think that it's fairly rare, and most of the blogging world is still mad crazy about The Killers. Enjoy the song, more music coming soon [as is par for the course].

You might think that with this post I'll be talking about the new disc, Neon Bible, which has taken over the blogging world lately. Well, you are wrong. Everyone knows about that disc and every other blogger has already tried, largely unsuccessfully, to post songs from the album. So instead I would like to remind us all of a simpler time, when A&R people didn't troll the internet looking for blog postings, when music came on a tangible form of media you could hold, smell, and break, and where a little indie band from any part of the world would only gain notoriety in their neck of the woods due to word of mouth and insane live shows.

Those days are gone, but music from then is still around, even music from bands now made famous by this entirely too convoluted process. And so with this post I bring you back to when Arcade Fire was just hitting the tipping point, with the first track, and then to when most of the world was just starting to realize they were something special, with the second track taken from their performance at KCRW.

Enjoy the music everyone, and keep supporting your favorite bands.

We here at The World Forgot are currently working on revamping the experience you get when you somehow wander into our webspace. If you'll notice on the left bar there are a few new blogs listed in "Friends and Lovers" and we finally have an email contact posted, even if it's only a freebie. Hopefully loads of new things will be popping up periodically over the next few days but you'll have to cut us some slack as we've been busy celebrating St. Patty's Day, birthdays, and the now worldwide phenomenon of March Madness.

Business will continue to carry on even while we take a moment to collect ourselves and reshape this little place we call home.

The Weakerthans

I might have a love/love relationship going with this little band from Winnipeg, aptly named The Weakerthans. And I guess what I mean by love/love is that my relationship with them is just like a love/hate relationship, just without anything I can ever find to hate about them. From their release, Fallow, in 1999 through their latest album, Reconstruction Site, they've done nothing but impress me and I honestly cannot say why they haven't exploded with popularity yet. I guess I'll file them away with Shout Out Louds as yet another wonderful band, making great music, who just doesn't seem to get to the tipping point.

I present to you vol 9, titled Leftovers because I began compiling these thirteen songs at the beginning of December, or right after the American celebration of Thanksgiving.

01 : The Postal Service - Be Still My Heart : Let's be honest, I think almost everything Ben Gibbard touches is made out of pure gold. Especially when he teams up with Jimmy Tamborello, of Dntel fame, and makes quirky poptronica tunes with great lyrics and fun melodies. This track is no deviation from their now famous formula. Wait for the half way point in the song for the pure bliss that Gibbard brings to most of his work to become undeniably yours as well.

02 : Superdrag - Sucked Out : This song was huge back when I was attending university, but since then I fear it has largely disappeared. The chorus, which consists of the plea "who sucked out the feeling?" repeated multiple times, is the epitomy of teenage angst and the rage we all have against this post modern, stereotyped, white-washed world. Ok, so that might be giving Superdrag more credit than this song actually deserves, but I do feel like we all identify with this song in some way.

03 : They Might Be Giants - Am I Awake : Normally I don't really get into music that They Might Be Giants makes. There's something about their music that reminds of all things awkward in my life and it's frustrating to listen to songs that to me are without rhyme or reason. Just as with many other fringe artists, though, there occasionally arises a song that grabs my attention and demands that I share it's infectious joy with everyone I know. This is one of those moments.

04 : Fields - Charming the Flames : If there was one band in the world worthy of being compared to the brilliant sound of Arcade Fire then this would be the band. I'm sick of everyone labelling anything new, interesting, or original as "the next Arcade Fire" so I won't go that far. What I will say is that they have a wonderful sound and their EP, 7 From the City, is amazing. If these kids put forth this same sort of creative effort on their full album they will be famous. Or at least famous amongst the blogger generation.

05 : Colour Revolt - Mattresses Underwater : I cannot recall where I first heard of this band, or if I've heard of any song other than this one, but in the end none of that information really matters. If I was forced to categorize this band I would say they easily fall into the same vein as Modest Mouse. But in a good way, not in a way that makes them seem like another knock-off album from Wolf Parade. Whatever happened to Wolf Parade anyway? Hopefully they went the way of The Vines and just stopped the atrocity.

06 : Get Cape Wear Cape Fly - Once More With Feeling : I apparently have somewhat of a soft spot for bands with long names. Or with comical names. Luckily for Get Cape Wear Cape Fly their name fits into both categories. Luckily for you their name isn't some small gimmick designed to get people to listen to their music. They actually have talent, and just over halfway through the song they also have trumpets. And talent and trumpets are always a good combination.

07 : Beirut - Elephant Gun : I've heard people label Beirut as a new gypsy music, ethnic folk, new folk, eastern European revivalist, ad naseum. Let's just put Beirut up on the shelf with other such talented acts like Page France, Asher Lev, or Sufjan Stevens. Combining a lot of instruments, most of them admittedly associated with folk and ethnic music, and a lot of voices into one track makes for an intricate sound that is as original as it is familiar. And the song continues to build one layer on top of another until you can't help but smile.

08 : Foo Fighters - Times Like These (Acoustic) : Every once in awhile I sneak back a couple of years, you know, before blogging was where teenagers found their music, and I pick out an outstanding track from an outstanding band. For those of you who aren't old enough to remember here's a quick history lesson. The Foo Fighters are helmed by the very talented Dave Grohl, who used to play drums for a little band called Nirvana, and at certain points in his career he has wavered between the electronic and the acoustic side of rock. For this track he deliciously decided to record it both ways and this acoustic rendition is amazing.

09 : Jimmy Eat World - Drugs Or Me (styrofoam remix) : Just the other day I was talking to a good buddy of mine when I suddenly realized he was wearing a Jimmy Eat World shirt. I was quite amazed and I asked him the question "whatever happened to those guys?" I love their sound and the last I had heard of them was a couple of years ago with the album Futures. Which, by the way, I thought was very good. Apparently they released an EP almost two years ago, from which this track hails, and they're working on recording a new full length which could allegedly be out soon.

10 : Paolo Nutini - Jenny Don't Be Hasty : You can tell Mr. Nutini is a young rock star in the making. He has the swagger, the panache, and even the sound of a budding rock star. And the best part is that he doesn't come across as just another band ripping off the sixties and the seventies. Granted, some of his tracks do get a little guitar solo happy, but he's young, he's supposed to be indulgent. Anyway, this track is great, simply great music.

11 : The Fratellis - Ole Black'n'Blue Eyes : Most of the music I've heard from The Fratellis is horrible. I can't endorse them as a band, I can't stand behind their album, I can't even say that I really like their sound much at all. I do, however, like this one song. And that's really the brilliance of a mix album. I don't have to like a band, I just have to like one song. I will warn you as you listen to this track; you might really like this song, just as I did, but be warned that this song is almost nothing like the rest of their debut album.

12 : Thom Yorke - Videotape : Alright, I'll admit that the album, Eraser, was like listening to Radiohead without any diversity or depth. But that doesn't mean that Thom Yorke needs the rest of Radiohead to make great music, it just means that if he wants to do a solo album he should make music in a completely different style than what him and his mates usually turn out. This is one of those instances where Thom's brilliance shines through. It's just him, a piano, and his very distinct voice.

13 : The Long Winters - The Commander Thinks Aloud : This is easily one of the best concept songs I have ever heard. John Roderick wrote this song as a reaction to the Challenger space shuttle disaster and I cannot imagine a more heart wrenching piece of music ever being written about a tragedy. The imagery is gorgeous, the music is moving, and the last repeated line will leave your heart filled to the brim with the terrible injustice that happened that day. "The crew compartment is breaking up."

Andrew Bird

As most of us know Andrew Bird makes slightly out of the mainstream pop music that at times can sound chaotic, sloppy, awkward, and occasionally bad. There are some songs, though, on which Mr. Bird's creativity and poise shine through in sparkling clarity. The song Tables and Chairs immediately comes to mind as a quick example. It's as if Andrew has such a load of influences and ideas for songs that if he isn't careful they all compete with his sound and muddy up his songs.

Posted below is one song that defies the trappings that Mr. Bird can fall into on his albums and shines through as a true example of the genius that he is capable of. Here it is my friends, enjoy.

What do you get when you take the ex-drummer of Philly band Matt Pond PA, throw in two ladies that he's dated and some other guys? You get a band named after an American Football term, Audible. They're a Philly based band and you can hear the Matt Pond PA influence come through their sound. Audible isn't as fluid, or as melodic, as their old counterparts, but they come across with a certain panache, a sort of awkward swagger, that is both comforting and unique.

Try a song of theirs on for size, you won't be disappointed. And to sweeten the deal they're currently working on their second full length project. Kudos to Audible.

I've been tired lately. Consequently I've been sleeping a lot. But in between sleeping times I was travelling all over the great country of Thailand. During that time I crashed my fileserver [thanks for the vote of popularity folks], I've listened to loads of new music via the quick internet down there, and apparently Hype Machine and Yousendit stopped working well together.

This leaves me in a bit of a conundrum. I'll continue posting music, but as we all know most people won't find it unless it gets listed on Hype. I'm working on a solution to this problem and hopefully tomorrow I'll be back up and running with no more problems. [and maybe I'll end up crashing yet another free filehost. haha]

Well, We're Back

After touring the land of smiles, Thailand, for the entire month of February The World Forgot is finally back at a place where internet is easy to come by and uploading of songs won't cost three or four dollars each.

In other news I think I might be part of the reason my fileserver crashed. After uploading multiple copies of new and live versions of Arcade Fire songs my fileserver bombed out and has been down for over a month now. Hilarious yes, pain in the neck yes, do I care, no.

Anyway, expect new music to start showing up here. Especially form Paolo Nutini, Jamie T, The Good The Bad & The Queen, and various other artists. Who knows, maybe even some Take That, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, or Simon Webbe will make their mark upon this page.

I've had a slight infatuation with Joseph Arthur since I first discovered his artwork, mainly paintings and mixed media. It was later that I realized his talent as a musician easily eclipses his talent as a painter. But I reckon both forms of creative expression feed each other.

This song is off of Joseph Arthur's latest release, Nuclear Daydream, and it's contains all the classic sounds of a typical Arthur song. And I really like the repetition of the lyrics "I'm no longer who I was, no longer who I thought I was." According to this song, time is moving on, and so am I.

Still fighting a bad internet connection, hence no pictures in any of these posts, and a broken filehost, hence no multiple song uploads. It takes almost a half hour to upload a single song, and that's if it works the first time, so cut me some slack.

Here's a remix of the Killer's song When You Were Young. It's a remix by Jacque Lu Cont who made his name while making Thin White Duke remixes of pop music. This effort of his is a slow build and takes some patience for the first couple of minutes as subtle synth and echo effects can be a bit, well, slow at times. But the payoff at just over two minutes and thirty seconds into the song is well worth the wait.

So I am still fighting a little crash over at my filehost. But fear not, there is still music to be found here at The World Forgot. The only problem is that I had previously uploaded about a full month's worth of music to my host, which is now all unavailable.

Instead you're getting some classic tracks from way back. And yes, this song does have to do with Christmas, but you're getting it anyway. It's been sitting proudly on my desktop since my girl sent it to me and I thought it was time to return that favor to the masses.

Damien Rice

Well, while I wait for the underwater fiber optic cables to be repaired, not to mention my fileserver is going through some allegedly massive overhauls, I'm relegated to posting short little rants about worldwide internet and how thoroughly bad their service is.

All that aside I might have found a loophole to jump through for the next couple of weeks. And that loophole is ye old Yousendit. I'm old enough to remember when Yousendit was the king of the hill, before upstarts like Gigasize, MyDataBus, and Filelodge [etc. etc. etc.] undercut their user base.

Anyway, I'm not even sure if I posted this song before. In some trick of the twentieth century I'm not able to post to my blog but I can't view it. It's really rather hilarious. But as funny as that may be this song is not. It's Damien Rice with his partner in crime Lisa Hannigan singing their own special rendition of Silent Night. I know Christmas is long gone, but this song is worth a listen at any point in the year.

My Internet is Dead

Hey hey, I'll be surprised if this publishes. I currently reside in a large Asian country that has had severe internet problems since an undersea earthquake off of the coast of Taiwan on December 27, 2006.

I'm doing fine, it's just the blog is floating dead on the information super pile up. They claim it'll be sorted out in a couple of weeks, sometime around the middle of February. Until then my posts will be sparse at best.

Carry on getting your music elsewhere for awhile. The World Forgot shall return and shall return with a vengeance.

I ran into this video while browsing YouTube the other day and I thought this bit by comedian Rob Paravonian was pretty clever. I like music, I like to laugh, so it's nice when these two things come together. Lovely satire Rob, very well done.

Arcade Fire

We've all heard the buzz surrounding the new Arcade Fire album due out in 2007. And if you're even one half as excited for it as I am you're ready to buy the disc the day it hits the stores. My only fear is that it will lack the intensity, the sense of play that made their debut, Funeral, such an amazing album.

Anyway, here's to hoping the long wait between albums has allowed them to skip right over the dreaded sophomore slump. Enjoy the music, the first nine tracks is the live recording off of KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic show. And I must say these songs sound amazing. The last track posted here is the new Arcade Fire single entitled Intervention as heard on BBC 1.

No Doubt

When I started this blog I never expected to post anything to do with the band No-Doubt. To be honest I liked their style and their sound a lot more back when Gwen was sporting pink hair and the rest of the band didn't come across like some punk-rockers in a B-list movie. Apparently they still have an audience somewhere in the world, and guessing from Gwen's latest solo efforts that somewhere is probably Japan.

This song is from way back, during the era when all you heard in the summer was Sugar Ray, Fastball, the Goo Goo Dolls, and of course No Doubt on the radio. It's a solid acoustic effort and it showcases the idea that this band is made up of actual musicians, not just eye candy.

One Stop Shop

For the next couple of days, maybe even weeks, my life is going to be extremely busy. Therefore the frequency of my posting will probably drop a bit and for this I apologize. I'll still try to throw up some music and some lovin for you all, but don't expect anything spectacular.

All that being said I do have this one spectacular post for you all to enjoy. About every six weeks I get a little bored with the music I've been listening to. And when that happens I troll the internet to find what's getting buzz, who the kids are listening to, and who deserves a mention on this blog. And after I've sampled hundreds of tracks I select the music I think you all should listen to.

So here it is, the first installation of what I hope will be a long series of posts. Because I find these files in various and sundry places, and then compile them all into one hopefully convenient post, I've dubbed this series One Stop Shop.

Seven Days of Sufjan : part 7

Today is a sad day because it marks the last of my Seven Days of Sufjan. It was a fun trip while it lasted and I hope I provided you all with some Christmas cheer and some harder to find tracks. Thanks for all the comments everyone. Also, merry Christmas to you all. Over the past week I've been getting hits on this blog from every continent but Antarctica, but I'm sure that's just because it's summer for them right now so they're probably off sipping cocktails and chasing penguins.

Everything this man plays is golden. Here's a clip of him playing Chicago; a simple and yet stunningly beautiful song.

I'm not sitting at my own computer right now so I cannot honor the comments I received yesterday with extra Sufjan songs right now. But fear ye not, I am a man of my word and tomorrow I will upload some extra rare tracks from the man who once called Michigan his home. For today I am posting a track that I'm not sure anyone else has put online yet. Probably because it's an instrumental track that's rather short and rather simple. But it's precisely these musical interludes that make Sufjan who he is. These musical leftovers are what flesh out his albums and give us all a reason to actually buy full albums instead of settling for single song downloads.

Seven Days of Sufjan : part 4

This is a video of Sufjan playing an impromptu version of "For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti" at SXSW in 2004. And yes, he was famous then too. Watch the video, it's simply wonderful.

Another day has come and another Sufjan song is posted. This puts us just over half way through Seven Days of Sufjan and I must say it has been an enjoyable run. As I stated in the first post, if there are comments left during this time I'll post more than one song per day. On top of the Christmas music I also have some rare and largely uncirculated Sufjan songs that I think you all would enjoy. If I don't get any comments I'll just keep posting one song a day. Today we look into the grab bag and we find a track from Mr. Stevens that is quite honestly the best Christmas or winter themed song I've heard. I know I'm prone to exaggerations, but this is one time when you must take me seriously. Let us be honest for a moment. Sufjan Stevens was the single driving force that brought music blogging to the prominent position that it now holds. He was the indie darling we all loved and craved and he's the only reason you might be skimming this skimpy post.

Christmas Showdown

Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams

Frank Sinatra rounds out the top three all time Christmas Albums. Although I'll always love Frank I'm not sure if his lounge singer act will ever trump the likes of Bing Crosby or Andy Williams. Maybe he was too much of a vagabond to ever really corner the market on something as traditional and respected as Christmas. Regardless as to the reasons he's not my favorite he still has the standard Sinatra pinache and it puts an interesting spin on some classic songs.

Seven Days of Sufjan

As I try to sort out why Hype doesn't recognize mp3's stored over at gigasize I've decided to begin my Seven Days of Sufjan a couple of days early. For the next seven days, beginning now, I'll be posting a Christmas song by Sufjan once a day. If I get requests or I get enough comments I might even up it to two or three songs a day, depending on the traffic this gets.

Bing Crosby is the next man in line for these Christmas posts. His Christmas album is a classic owned by or at least familiar to every American family. I'll be honest; I love Bing Crosby, the newest Sufjan Stevens Christmas music is incredible, but my heart's favorite will always be Andy Williams. The songs in this post hark back to the days when bands were big, variety television shows were bigger, and vinyl was the only way to hear your tunes. Vinyl is actually how I was introduced to Andy Williams. My father had the Andy Williams Christmas album on LP and we used to haul the old record player up from the basement the weekend after Thanskgiving to start listening to the man with a voice so smooth.

Everything Reminds Me of Her

I might have the coolest younger brother on the face of the earth. He has great taste in music and occasionally he makes a mix for some various or sundry reason and ships it out via the internet to me. Granted, he is a younger brother, so some of his musical choices are a little sketch, but for the most part he puts together solid music. This mix of his is a little skewed because he made it for his girlfriend and every song in this selection apparently reminds him of her in some way. I figure the kid must be in love because I cannot fathom any other reason he would be listening to Fergie.

Mr. Stevens is All The Rage

Every so often I conform to the adage "give the people what they want." In other words I sell out for page loads. After all, if I average 600 hits a day for the rest of my life I'll make almost 20 dollars a year in ad revenue. And that's worth it to me. If I wasn't Dutch I wouldn't be much.

Ok, enough of that. I really just wanted to post some rare Sufjan Stevens Tracks. That's really all I'm doing these days. And if it keeps the hyperactive indie kids happy [and leaving comments] then it really is worth my time. Enjoy the music and have a happy Christmas.

Making a Map

I had this grand idea to make a musical map of my life. I got the idea right after I met my girlfriend in Thailand last year. It was an idea to help her to get to know me. It would be full of songs that all had stories. Each song would be from a different era of my life. And I am working on it. I am still working on it almost a year later. It's a pretty huge undertaking to take your life and pare it down to two discs of music. But it will be glorious when it is finished. Ok, maybe that's a bit of an overstatement. I guess I'm merely aiming for informative at this point. And I hope it'll be completed before next summer.

I need to stop being a perfectionist.

And I do need to give you some music to satisfy the lonely people out there.
